BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Standards

All our technicians have attended a presentation on the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear Standard which addresses end-of-lease vehicle inspections and relates the findings accordingly.

“Fair Wear and Tear occurs when normal usage causes acceptable deterioration to a vehicle. It is not to be confused with damage, which occurs as a result of a specific event or series of events such as impacts, inappropriate stowing of items, harsh treatment, negligent acts or omissions”.

Subjectivity will affect any assessment of vehicle condition, which is why we have put together the following classifications of repair, based on our understanding of the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear Standard:

  • Essential Repair

This is damage beyond BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Standard and must be rectified to avoid charges.

  • Desirable Repair

This damage might not be considered “light” or “minor” or otherwise permitted by wear and tear, but a leasing company might also assess it as chargeable.

  • Fair Wear & Tear

This damage is within BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Standard and should not result in a charge.

Inspections

The vehicle inspection should be supplied clean (inside and out), recently washed, dry and in conditions of good light. If it is not supplied in this manner, ChipsAway will proceed with the inspection as far as possible in the circumstances. However, the effectiveness of the inspection will be limited, and regrettably, no discount or refund will be available.

Our inspections cover the condition of your vehicle’s bodywork, interior, glass and wheels/trims. All other elements of the vehicle condition should be assessed independently. To avoid disappointment, please make sure you book your ChipsAway Fair Wear & Tear Inspection approximately ten weeks before the vehicle is due for return.

During your inspection, any damage that in our opinion is identified as being outside of the BVRLA Fair Wear and Tear Standard will be identified to you. ChipsAway can also complete most repairs for you – usually in less than a day and at up to 50% less than a traditional body shop!

Repairs and Certification

Where damage is identified as requiring repair, ChipsAway will be pleased to quote for repairs whilst the vehicle is still in your custody. All ChipsAway repairs carry a full guarantee. We will provide an End of Lease Vehicle Condition Certificate upon completion of your inspection, or after any required repairs have been completed.

Please note that all assessments are undertaken with our understanding of the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear standard detailed above. Your leasing company or their inspecting agents will reach their own judgement based on the condition of the vehicle subsequently presented. You are unlikely to incur undue charges on a vehicle inspected by us, but we recommend that you also check specific returns policy details separately.

Avoiding Charges

While your ChipsAway Fair Wear & Tear Inspection will cover the cosmetic condition of your vehicle’s bodywork, wheels, windscreen, and interior, there are other things you may wish to check to avoid incurring charges from the leasing company.

Other elements of the vehicle’s condition, such as those listed below, may be checked to ensure it meets the required standard upon return. You should return the following along with your vehicle.

  • Keys

  • V5/Logbook

  • MOT Certificate

  • Tax Disc

  • Service Book/History

  • User Manual

  • Tyres

  • Vehicle Accessories

In addition to your ChipsAway inspection and the above checklist, you should also check:

  • Servicing Schedule – Ensure that your vehicle has been serviced according to the proper schedule and that services have been stamped and returned with the vehicle. If the schedule has not been followed, you can expect charges for both the costs of any missed services and also the loss of value due to the lack of a full service history.
  • Vehicle Mileage – If you are likely to exceed any contractual mileage limit, please consider reducing your daily mileage before the limit has passed.
  • Vehicle Keys – Return all keys (including the locking wheel nut) with the vehicle and that all immobilisers and remote locking devices work correctly.
  • Badges, Labels, and Advertising – Remove any badges, labels, or advertising from your vehicle’s bodywork, unless you have agreed to leave them with your leaving company in advance (e.g. if removing them would alter the paintwork, this needs to be rectified before return as it is not covered by Fair Wear & Tear.
  • Equipment – Check any equipment supplied with the vehicle is present and in good working order; this includes:
    • Spare Wheel
    • Tyre Jack
    • Toolkit
    • Emergency Warning Triangle
    • On-Board Computer
    • Satellite Navigation System (including Data Disc)
    • In-Car Entertainment System
  • Mechanical Condition – Check that you have rectified any obvious problems with the mechanical condition of the vehicle, e.g., tyres inflated within the legal limit, and all lights and indicators are in good working order.
  • Policy Details – Each leasing company may vary their returns to meet customer and operation requirements, so please check your specific details.
